thinkSmart Business Intelligence Defined

thinkSmart Business Intelligence (BI) focuses on exposing previously isolated information and leveraging your existing IT investment to result in improved information quality and timeliness. Our goal is to help companies drive breakthrough results across the enterprise while reducing total cost of ownership by simply being intelligent about BI.

Intelligent Business Intelligence

Business Intelligence simply captures raw data, transforms the data and combines that data into information that can be effectively used to improve your business. Few would argue that the goal of BI is to empower decision-makers, allowing them to make better, faster, and data driven decisions; however more often than not decisions around BI focus more on tools and vendor offerings (and the number of zeros for ongoing licensing!) than an integrated solution to empower business decision making.

The thinkSmart solution combines online analytical processing (OLAP), query and reporting, ad-hoc analysis, data integration and application development tools on a .NET platform aligned around the following three principles:

  1. Requirements and Domain Expertise: Business Intelligence is about delivering data to business decision makers in order to help them make better decisions. A BI solution should allow testing of hypotheses. Gain insights or validate decisions in seconds in absolute confidence in the numbers rather then wait days or weeks for a report.

  2. Data Quality and a Single Source of Truth: If necessary create a data warehouse (or its smaller logical units - a data mart) to store information regarding part or all of your company activities. The database design must support reporting on and analyzing your data specifically. It is important to keep in mind the warehouse doesn’t have to include everything in order to be useful, in fact the most useful and successful warehouse's grow and evolve over time within a well thought out and executed data strategy.

  3. Reduce your TCO: Ongoing Business Intelligence costs should be aligned to meet changing business needs and improving data quality rather than increasing dependency on proprietary applications and the costly per Seat licenses. For example, it’s not uncommon for a large enterprise to spend millions of dollars per year on ongoing licensing for BI tools while neglecting changing business needs and under-funding data quality initiatives.

By using less proprietary (and typically more flexible) tools thinkSmart can leverage existing investments in understanding the business needs and current company/industry specific data models. thinkSmart can help companies focus on their business intelligently while continuously improving data quality at a reduced TCO
